I offer one free developmental copyediting sample of up to 1,000 words per customer on book-length (more than 50,000 words) manuscripts only. I request the first fifty pages and randomly select a passage to edit as the sample. I like to have the beginning included in those pages in case I need to refer to that opening chapter. However, I usually select a piece deeper into the story because beginnings are often a poor representation of the writer’s skills. Either the first few pages have been polished to death, and may have lost their shine, or the writer started at the wrong place, which throws off the pacing and other important elements in the story. I need to see your strengths and weaknesses so I know how I can help you improve your writing.
